Most of the Gilbert homes I walk into have a dog and at least one kid under ten. That combination raises the bar on everything.
A dog who jumps is a nuisance when it’s your friend at the door. He’s a problem when it’s a four-year-old getting knocked flat. A dog who guards a bone is manageable until a toddler crawls over to see what he’s got. A dog who bolts out the front door is a bad afternoon until the front door is opening every ten minutes because your kid’s friends are in and out all day. That’s the work: a dog who’s reliable in a house where the noise level is unpredictable and the front door never stops. I train you and your family too, because your kids are the ones the dog has to listen to when I’m not there.
What I see in Gilbert homes
Cosmo is not training. Seventeen acres, a pond, and one of the best known dog parks in the country sitting on Ray Road. I like Cosmo. But a lot of Gilbert owners are using it as a substitute for training, and it doesn’t work that way. An hour of high-arousal chasing with thirty strange dogs teaches your dog to be excited around dogs, not to listen around them. Then there’s a scuffle, and now you’ve got a dog who’s worse than when you started. Half my Gilbert clients found me after a bad afternoon at a dog park.
Fence fighting. Newer Gilbert lots put your dog and the neighbor’s dog eight feet apart with a block wall between them, all day, every day. Two dogs rehearsing the same fight a thousand times. Then you walk yours past that same dog on the street and wonder where the reactivity came from.
Greenbelt lots. Morrison Ranch, Power Ranch, Val Vista Lakes, Seville, Agritopia. A path runs behind your house and it’s a nonstop parade of strollers, scooters, bikes, and other dogs. The Riparian Preserve adds ducks, rabbits, birds, a six-foot leash rule, and a dog who’s never been taught what to do when something runs. That’s not a fun walk. That’s a wrestling match.

Once your dog is solid at home, home stops being the test. We work the Riparian Preserve loops, Freestone Park, the grass at Gilbert Regional Park, the Heritage District patios on a Friday night, and sometimes the sidewalk outside the fence at Cosmo—one of the best places in the East Valley to teach a dog to stay calm while other dogs lose their minds twenty feet away.
