Accidents in the house, chewing, and bolting out the front door. In Laveen, I see that combination a lot.
Laveen sits south of the river, between South Mountain and the Estrellas. It used to be all farms, and some of it still is. Now most of it is newer neighborhoods full of young families, right next to old farm lots with horses and RV gates. Block walls out back. Front doors that open right onto the street. And coyotes in the fields at night.
A dog who bolts out that front door is on Baseline or 51st Avenue in about a minute. A dog who goes to the bathroom in the house and chews everything is hard to live with. Neither one has to stay that way. I come to your house and we train right there. At your front door, in your living room, and in your yard. And I train you too, because you are the one holding the leash after I leave.
What I see on Laveen homes
A family called me about their rescued pug mix. He had some attitude. He went to the bathroom all over the house. He chewed on everything. And every time the door opened, he tried to run out. Three problems, one small dog. By the end, he was going outside to do his business, he was chewing on his toys and nothing else, and he waited back from the door when it opened.
That is a common set of problems with a rescue. He came home with habits from wherever he was before, and nobody had ever shown him the rules of this house. He is not a bad dog. He is a dog who has not been taught yet.
The door is the one I worry about most in Laveen. Most of these neighborhoods sit right off a busy road, and a small dog who gets out the front door does not have far to run. Teaching a dog to wait at an open door is one of the first things I do here.

Once your dog is doing well at home, we take the training out into the real world. We walk the path around Alvord Lake at Cesar Chavez Park in the evening, when it is busy. We walk past the fence at the dog park there. We stop by the Saturday market at Amadio Ranch. And we practice the front door with real people coming and going, because that is the one that matters.
