Tempe is a walking city. That is a problem if your dog can't walk on a leash.
Tempe is packed in tight. Apartments sit right next to older houses. The light rail runs through the middle of town. ASU brings tens of thousands of students every fall. There is a five-mile path around Town Lake, canal paths, seven dog parks, and patios on Mill Avenue that welcome dogs. People here walk everywhere.
None of that is any fun if your dog drags you down the sidewalk or barks and lunges at every dog he sees. Pulling and reactivity are the two problems I get called about most in Tempe. I fix them where they happen. On your street, at your corner, on the path behind your apartment. And I train you too, because you are the one holding the leash after I leave.
What I see on Tempe sidewalks
A family called me about an eight-month-old Cane Corso. He was already dragging his mom down the street, and he was not even full grown yet. Pulling does not get better on its own. A dog who pulls at eight months pulls harder at a year and a half, because every walk where pulling works teaches him to keep doing it. In Tempe, a lot of sidewalks run right next to busy roads like Rural, McClintock, and Southern. A dog who pulls there can end up in traffic.
Two of my Tempe clients had the same two problems. One had a small rescue dog. The other had a mixed breed. Both dogs went crazy when they saw another dog, and both pulled the whole walk. Those two problems usually come together. People let the small dog get away with it because he is small. But his owner still has to walk him twice a day, and in Tempe there are a lot of dogs to walk past. In the summer, everyone walks in the same hours, early in the morning and after dark, on the same paths. Your dog might pass fifteen dogs on one walk.
Another client had a shepherd mix. He was reactive to every dog he saw, and he would charge at people. In the older parts of Tempe, the front door is close to the sidewalk, and the sidewalk is always busy. Students, delivery drivers, other dogs, kids on scooters. A dog who charges at people in that kind of neighborhood is going to bite someone sooner or later. I work with those dogs. Between pulling and reactivity, that is most of what I do in Tempe.

Once your dog is doing well at home, we take the training out into the real world. We walk the Town Lake path on a Saturday morning. We sit on a patio on Mill Avenue. We walk through Tempe Marketplace on a leash. We walk past the fence at the Mitchell Park dog park, where the goal is to pass a lot of loose dogs without a reaction. Then we hike A Mountain at sunset, where the trail is narrow and steep and a dog who pulls is dangerous.
